Chapter 1: Hokusai ———

• Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was born in Honjo Warigesui (now Sumida Ward, Tokyo). He entered the studio of the ukiyo-e master Katsukawa Shunsho at the age of 19 and remained a prolific artist for seven decades until his death at 90. He is best known for his spectacular multi-print landscape series published around his 70s. His masterworks depicting Mount Fuji—celebrated globally as the "Red Fuji" and "The Great Wave"—continue to captivate people worldwide.

• The true marvel of the Yasuburo Hara Collection lies in its complete, unbroken sets. It features all 46 prints of Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, all 8 of A Tour of Waterfalls in Provinces, all 3 of Snow, Moon, and Flowers, all 11 of Rare Views of Famous Bridges in Provinces, and all 10 of One Thousand Pictures of the Sea.
  Furthermore, many of these prints are characterized by exceptionally sharp lines from their early pressings and are preserved in pristine condition, reflecting Mr. Hara’s extraordinary passion for collecting. Along with these famous landscape series, this chapter introduces five rare prints from One Hundred Ghost Stories (Hyaku Monogatari) and all three volumes of his illustrated book, One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji.

Chapter 2: Hiroshige ———

• Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was born into a samurai-class firefighting family at the Yayosu Quay in Edo (now Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo). He entered the studio of ukiyo-e master Utagawa Toyohiro at the age of 15. Over his lifetime, Hiroshige dedicated himself to landscape prints, cementing his legacy as the preeminent master of the genre. His breakout masterpiece is undoubtedly the renowned The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido edition). By masterfully capturing the scenic spots and local customs along the Tokaido highway through changing seasons, weather, and times of day, his poetic and evocative works won the hearts of the public and have been cherished for generations.

• The Hara Yasuburo Collection is highly celebrated for housing complete, unbroken sets of Hiroshige’s major landscape series. This chapter showcases four of his finest series: The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido edition), Famous Places of Kyoto, Snow, Moon, and Flowers, and Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. The exhibition offers a rich, immersive journey—from the iconic vistas of the Tokaido and the atmospheric elegance of Kyoto to the highly artistic depictions of Snow, Moon, and Flowers. It culminates in his own views of Mount Fuji, creating a spectacular artistic dialogue with his great rival, Hokusai.

Chapter 3: The Discerning Eye of Yasuburo Hara ———

• The Hara Yasuburo Collection also features a significant number of nikuhitsu ukiyo-e—unique, hand-painted original works created directly by the brushes of the masters. A look at the artists represented reveals a highly systematic and comprehensive collection spanning from the early Edo period to the modern era, offering a glimpse into Mr. Hara’s deeply scholarly approach to art.
  This final chapter introduces original paintings by Miyagawa Choshun and Katsukawa Shunsho (whose lineages led to Hokusai), Utagawa Toyoharu and Toyohiro (the artistic forebears of Hiroshige), as well as Tsukioka Settei, who was highly active in the Kamigata (Kansai) region. A particular highlight of this section is The Sarashina Diary Handscroll. Mr. Hara commissioned Kumon Ashibuchi, a master painter from his own home province of Tokushima, to create this stunning, richly colored 15-volume handscroll. The meticulously detailed craftsmanship and lavish production speak volumes about Mr. Hara’s immense passion and dedication to this project.
